Shabbat at AI

Join the AI family for a full Shabbat experience every week.

Welcome and join the Agudath Israel community - In prayer, in study and in acts of kindness.

As Abraham and Sarah kept the walls of their tent open so travelers could easily enter, at Agudath Israel we open our 'tent' to all interested in Judaism and help people find a comfortable and challenging place inside.

We value the wisdom and inspiration of Jewish tradition, but recognize the need for ongoing change within the parameters of the Conservative movement. Our members come from diverse religious backgrounds. Our programs and services for adults and children are rich and varied. Men and women participate equally in all aspects of the synagogue.More about us

Shalom Group

Sponsorship of a Syrian Family                 Update: Jan 21, 2016

Chaverim Hello,

The coordinating team for the Shalom Group (representing three Ottawa shuls: Adath Shalom, Agudath Israel and Beth Shalom) has been meeting frequently (face-to-face and via email) since we formally agreed to pursue sponsorship of a Syrian family. Shalom Group is working with Jewish Family Services (JFS), the official sponsorship agreement holder, and a dedicated account for The Shalom Group has been set up at JFS (which is the only issuer of charitable receipts [for this account] for all cash donations over $18.00).

As of Wednesday January 13th, we had $12,000.00 and our financial target is $30,000, which would allow the participating shuls to sponsor a family of four. A family is assigned once the Government of Canada is reassured that we have the financial resources to sponsor.

February 7 is Mitzvah Day at the SJCC - Look for the Shalom Group table. Come and write or draw your own letter of welcome to the arriving family (bring your children and grandchildren).  Information will also be available about volunteer opportunities.

The list of those willing and able to volunteer is getting longer. But there are still tasks that need doing and we would love to hear from you - individuals and families of all ages and backgrounds! Based on the experience of other groups, we know we will especially need help at this stage finding rental accommodation, collecting furniture and supplies and getting the apartment ready for its new tenants. Set an example and help us mobilize others...... to let others know of your interest and support, and to circulate information to your own family, friends and networks. We hope we can count on you.

THERE IS A HARD COPY OF BOTH THIS LETTER AND THE PLEDGE FORM AVAILABLE AT THE SHUL.  THERE IS ALSO A DOWNLOADABLE PDF ON THIS WEEK'S SHABBAT SHEET.

Please email any one of the contacts listed below to add your name (and category of interest) to our team of volunteers.
